Consecrated to the Virgin since 1096, the vastest church in the department, the cathedral permits a survey of the the major architectural styles from the romanesque period to the Renaissance period. It possesses magnificent stained-glass windows, made between the 13th an 16th centuries. The iron gates of the choir, works of master ironsmith Jacques de la Haye, the 17th century pulpit, from the Bec Hellouin Abbey, and the Treasure are all to be admired. Quite damaged in 1940 , the Cathedral’s restoration was only completed in 1973 at which time a golden rooster was placed at the top of the new spire.
The Yellow of Evreux
The most famous stained-glass window of the Cathedral is located in the 4th window of choir on northern side: the Madonna and Child in yellow jacket is one of the most beautiful in France. It was made, in the 14th Century, by an Evreux master glazier who used a new created colour: a silver salt yellow. This expensive colour was quickly used through France but the quality of the Evreux one went it down in History!
The Cathedral has had since 2007 a magnificent contemporary organ built by Pascal Quoirin and designed by Bruno Decaris. The futuristic designed 16 feet instrument has 53 games, 4 keyboards of 56 notes
and pedal boards of 32 steps. Every year Organ and Holy Music festival in Spring
